Cruise tourism to grow 60% - ADTA

by Rob Morris

Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) is expecting cruise passengers visiting the emirate to double in the next holiday season.

On Thursday, the organisation revealed its forecast for 199,113 people on luxury liners to step foot in the UAE’s capital between November and early May. Last season, some 125,200 people made the trip, according to ADTA figures.

"The forecast is based on the 100% occupancy level achieved by the cruise ships using Abu Dhabi as a 'port of call' last season," said Ahmed Hussein, ADTA’s deputy director general.

Because I’ll probably never have the sort of money that would make owning a cruise ship condo even a remote possibility, I can’t say whether it would be worth the expense. In some respects, you undoubtedly get what you pay for, but then, I don’t really want or need to be surrounded with luxury all the time. If someone came up with a middle-class condo ship that a mere mortal such as myself could afford, though, I’d certainly consider taking my home with me as I travel the globe. —Joe Kissell
